Sloppy Handwriting? Tips and Techniques to Improve Common Handwriting Problems

Even in this age of technology, students are writing for most of their day. Due to increased academic expectations, teachers rarely have enough time to teach handwriting. Illegible handwriting may lead to poor grades, low motivation to complete written tasks, and behavior issues. Handwriting should be an automatic skill; kids should be able to think and write simultaneously. This 3-hour webinar based on recent research includes inexpensive and simple adaptations and techniques that can be used in the classroom, at home, or during therapy sessions. Free resources are included for pediatric occupational therapists to use clinically as well!

Learning Outcomes

  1. List handwriting expectations per grade level.
  2. Identify screening tools that can be used with all handwriting styles.
  3. Identify readiness skills for preschool-level children.
  4. Describe strategies to improve or correct the eight components of handwriting including (1) memory, (2) reversals, (3) placement on the line, (4) size, (5) starting position, (6) letter formation, (7) spacing, and (8) speed.
  5. State the importance of therapist-lead, whole group, handwriting lessons on fine motor skill development.
