Screen Time and the Developing Brain
Along with the new issuance of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization’s updated recommendations for screen time and media usage in children comes a renewed concern and interest in exactly how technology affects the developing brain. This fast-paced, 1-hour course shares new research on concerns and benefits of screen time at different stages of development, its impact on motor and communication skills, and provides strategies to share with families about taming the technology challenges often faced in homes across the country.
- Identify the updated recommendations, along with researched concerns and benefits regarding the development of motor skills, speech and language, and social skills according to age.
- Recognize possible increased risk factors for children with special needs and developmental delays.
- Delineate strategies and guidance ideas to support parents in managing and maximizing appropriate screen time with their children.
Target Audience: introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, SLPs, other professionals, and parents
