Creating Time Awareness and Time Usage Skills in Children with Poor Executive Functioning
Executive Functions (EFs), the skills that allow us to plan, prioritize, organize, and carry out actions, are all based on our ability to think into the future. Children with poor EF skills often live in the “here and now,” and have limited ability to think, predict, or plan ahead. Many of our self-regulation supports and strategies are dependent on first helping the child to master the concepts of “time.” This 2-hour course provides a new look at how to systematically teach and support children in the development of a sense of time. This course is also available in an executive functioning webinar package.
- Define Executive Functions and lists skills considered under the definition.
- Examine EF weaknesses as an inability to think into the future.
- Distinguish between the different stages of “time management” abilities/needs.
- Describe visual schedules, apps, and visual timers as strategies for externalizing time.
- Identify a base of strategies and resources to assist children in developing time sense.
Target Audience: introductory- to advanced-level occupational therapists, teachers, and other professionals
