Let’s Get Thinking! Promoting Critical Thinking Skills in Children and Teens

We use critical thinking skills, often referred to as higher order thinking skills (HOTS), when current information is manipulated to deepen our understanding, alert to problematic thinking, or create new ideas and solutions. Many children and teens with special needs can engage in rote memorization of information but struggle to apply the language, executive functions, cognitive flexibility, and critical thinking to use information in a way that improves social and academic learning.

Since we now have facts available with the swipe of a screen, there’s an urgent need for our students to know how to analyze information and use it in deeper, more meaningful, and comprehensive ways. Additionally, with an overwhelming bombardment of social media, our children need to learn to discern information accurately for their own safety and well-being. This 90-minute webinar provides a general overview of critical thinking skills and how they develop. Hundreds of tips, tools, and strategies are provided to use immediately with students to promote deeper, more thorough, and independent problem-solving skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the stages of critical thinking.
2. List deficits in critical thinking and relate them to both academic and social-emotional learning for children with special needs.
3. State three strategies to promote critical thinking.
4. Identify resources and tools appropriate for a wide range of ability levels.
