Beneath the Surface: The Reality of Human Trafficking in Healthcare

Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar industry, and the world is its marketplace. It is imperative that occupational therapists recognize signs and red flags of trafficking because they might encounter currently trafficked individuals in their practices. There is little evidence that exists for the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions with this population. This 2-hour course reviews signs of human trafficking, reporting, the role of healthcare professionals with trafficked victims and survivors, barriers to leaving a trafficker, and how you can help take action to end it. Every victim deserves to be noticed and rescued, expand your human-trafficking knowledge, and learn what you can do to help. This course is included with the Ethical Foundations Webinar Package.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define labor trafficking.
  2. List the signs of human trafficking across a variety of occupational therapy settings and how to report to parents, educators, and law enforcement.
  3. Identify the role of medical professionals with survivors of human trafficking.
  4. Describe the barriers to leaving a trafficker.
  5. List how you can help take action to end human trafficking.
