OT Treatment Interventions for Self-Care Skills

Are you looking for a variety of OT Treatment Interventions for Self-Care Skills to implement immediately into your practice? This 3-hour intervention-based, jam-packed course addresses decreased ADL independence, a common challenge among the pediatric population. Participants explore motor learning principles, typical developmental milestones for each area, and most importantly, learn over 150 different play-based treatment ideas to increase engagement success and progress across a variety of intervention settings. Self-Care areas explored include dressing (socks/shoes, shirt, pants, fasteners, and shoe tying), bathing, hair/nail cutting, toileting, wiping/peri-care, oral hygiene, self-feeding, as well as sensory-based feeding strategies. The presenter includes handouts to improve client carryover. The course is included with The OT Treatment Interventions webinar package.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Examine principles of forward and backward chaining within self-care tasks to provide the just right challenge for optimal occupational performance.
  2. Describe the three stages of motor learning (cognitive, associative, autonomous) to identify the client’s stage to best develop a plan of care for self-care.
  3. Describe types of practice (blocked and random) to identify which type of practice will most benefit future clients for optimal skill development for self-care.
  4. Identify implications and benefits of using play-based tasks to grow self-care skills.
  5. Identify the link between the development of autonomy and self-care independence.
