OT’s Role in Addressing Challenging Behaviors in the School Environment

Within the school setting, OTs are known for their role in addressing fine and visual motor skills. But with occupational therapy’s focus on function and knowledge about sensory processing and self-regulation, OTs also play a pivotal role in addressing behaviors that support academic success for students with ASD, sensory processing differences, chronic stress and anxiety, and more. This 2-hour course takes a closer look at the unique role of OTs in addressing challenging behaviors at school, differentiates OT’s role from that of other educational professions, and provides a framework for a multi-disciplinary team approach. You leave this course with tools to effectively select strategies and the confidence to introduce appropriate interventions to students’ educational teams.

Learning Outcomes

1. Differentiate OT’s role from the role of other educational professionals in addressing challenging behaviors.
2. Identify the five components required for a comprehensive intervention plan using the Ziggurat Model.
3. Compare and contrast three different tools used for comprehensive intervention plans created to address challenging behaviors.
4. Given a brief case study, select intervention strategies for use within each of the five components of the Ziggurat Model.
