Self-Injurious Behaviors in ASD and Developmental Disorders: A Holistic Approach to Reduce Frequency and Intensity

Self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) are fairly common in children with autism and other developmental disabilities. These behaviors are scary to witness and often leave us uncertain how to help. This 2-hour webinar provides an overview of the known causes of SIBs, a method for determining the function of the SIB, and a framework for intervention.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify three potential causes of self-injurious behaviors.
  2. State the proactive vs. reactive role of sensory strategies in addressing self-injurious behaviors.
  3. Identify intervention strategies based on the identified function of the self-injurious behavior.
