Pediatric Chronic Constipation: Supporting Participation, Regulation, and Daily Routines
Chronic functional constipation (CFC) is a common yet often overlooked condition in pediatric practice. It is characterized by infrequent, difficult, or painful bowel movements that persist over time. In children, approximately 95% of constipation cases are classified as functional, meaning there is no identifiable medical or structural cause. Despite its prevalence, CFC can significantly impact a child’s physical comfort, emotional regulation, behavior, attention, participation in daily routines, and overall quality of life.
This 2-hour training is designed for pediatric occupational therapists and related professionals seeking a deeper understanding of how chronic functional constipation can impact development and occupational performance. Participants explore common signs and symptoms, contributing factors (including neurobiological, sensory, behavioral, and psychosocial influences), co-occurring conditions, and the short- and long-term consequences of CFC in children.
A central focus of this course is the biopsychosocial model and how it informs comprehensive, individualized assessment and intervention planning. Through case examples and current research from neuroscience, behavioral health, lifestyle medicine, and psychogastroenterology, participants walk away with information to support clinical reasoning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and effective case management when working with children experiencing chronic functional constipation.
