PANS/PANDAS vs. Autism: What OTs Need to Know About Overlap, Differences, and Effective Treatment Strategies
Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome/pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANS/PANDAS) can have a profound impact on a child’s daily function, participation, and overall family dynamics. These conditions are often misunderstood and underdiagnosed because their symptoms—such as anxiety, sensory sensitivities, sleep challenges, and compulsive behaviors—can overlap with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, and Tourette’s Syndrome. To add complexity, PANS/PANDAS can also co-occur with these conditions, making accurate identification and support even more challenging.
For occupational therapists, understanding the differences and overlaps between PANS/PANDAS and autism is critical to providing effective, holistic care. This 2-hour training . . .
- helps OTs focus on a holistic, strength-based, and integrative approach, and
- equips OTs with practical strategies to confidently support children and families navigating these complex conditions.
