The Role of OT in Toilet Training

From a parent’s perspective, no other developmental milestone is likely more life changing than independence in toileting! In this 90-minute webinar, participants learn two methods for toilet training children with sensory processing disorders and/or autism. Gwen reviews a variety of resources, modifications, adaptive equipment, and sensory strategies to recommend or use immediately. Strategies for home and school and toddlers through teens are discussed, leaving you ready to tackle this important developmental milestone with your clients right away.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify signs of toilet-training readiness in children with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorder.
  2. Determine the impact of sensory over- or under-responsiveness on toilet training.
  3. Delineate the roles of visual schedules, social stories, rewards and consequences, and sensory strategies in the toilet-training process.
  4. Identify the pros and cons of two very different approaches to toilet training.
  5. Select possible next steps for children with extreme fears or aversion to the toilet-training process.
