Self-Regulation Intervention Using Neuroscience, Sensory Processing Theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Techniques

Research shows that self-regulation is one of the most important predictors of academic success. In a nutshell, self-regulation is the ability to respond appropriately to a situation and involves sensory processing, emotions, and executive functioning skills. This 6-hour, action-packed, strategy-rich course provides a framework for self-regulation intervention using neuroscience, sensory processing theory, and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques. This approach will empower participants to effectively help kids who are struggling with attention, outbursts, meltdowns, social interactions, aggression, and more. Gwen reviews the neurological basis of the unique self-regulation challenges faced by children and teens with ASD, ADHD, ODD, a history of trauma or neglect and uncovers the way to immediately impact change.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Assess self-regulation skills by selecting from a variety of easily obtainable tools and checklists.
  2. Identify the role of neurotransmitters in self-regulation and select strategies to balance brain chemistry to aid in self-regulation.
  3. Recognize effective communication strategies to ensure the carryover of intervention strategies through forms, hands-on teaching materials, visuals, and easy-to-understand language.
  4. Differentiate an intervention approach to facilitate self-regulation based on a child’s unique needs.
  5. Integrate a teaching model of “Before-During-Reflection” into intervention with students.
  6. Differentiate the roles of commonly used intervention methods such as emotional regulation programs, listening programs, yoga, mindfulness, and sensory integration therapy and identify kids best served by these approaches as determined by your assessment.
