Social skills are a vital part of early childhood development and can influence many areas, such as academics, behavior, and mental health. Facilitating social skill development in early elementary, middle school, and high school students using structured play activities can encourage positive peer relationships and overall academic success. This 1-hour course discusses social skill development; the importance of social skills in academics, behavior, and mental health; and the benefits of play-based activities to facilitate social development. The presenter suggests ways therapists, teachers, and parents can support early social skills during play and other activities. Free visuals are also included. This course is included with the Functional Communication Webinar Package.

  2. Identify areas impacted by social skill development.
  3. Recognize activities that support social skill development.
  4. Identify strategies to support social skill development during play-based activities.

Chloe Hill, MA, CCC-SLP, is a pediatric speech-language pathologist in Southern California. She works with children with language and articulation needs from early intervention through high school. She has experience with a variety of diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorder, childhood apraxia of speech, cleft palate, and intellectual disability. She currently treats patients in a pediatric clinic setting as well as creating digital curriculum and teaching resources for speech-language pathologists and special educators.
