Facilitating Self-Regulation in Children and Teens

Research shows that self-regulation is one of the most important predictors of academic success. In a nutshell, self-regulation is the ability to respond appropriately to a situation and involves sensory processing, emotions, and executive functioning skills. This 2-hour webinar provides an overview of self-regulation and a framework for facilitating the development of this vital skill set in kids struggling with attention, outbursts, social interactions, self-calming, and more.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define self-regulation.
  2. Assess self-regulation skills.
  3. Identify areas of development hindering self-regulation based on a child’s assessment.
  4. List resources to assist in the development of self-regulation.
  5. Integrate a teaching model of “Before-During-Reflection” into intervention with students.

Gwen Wild, MOT, OTR/L, is an experienced occupational therapist specializing in the treatment of children and adolescents diagnosed with autism and sensory processing disorders. Gwen is the creator of BrainWorks sensory diet tools. Although selling the business in October 2020, she remains with Sensational Brain as the AOTA CE Administrator. She currently works as an Intensive Support Specialist for a large educational service agency. Gwen presents to audiences nationwide on topics related to sensory modulation and self-regulation. She lives in Galesburg, Michigan, with her husband and will soon have an empty nest as her three daughters venture out on their own.
