ADHD: Transformative Practices for Children and Teens

ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorder. Over 10% of the school-age population are diagnosed and many others show symptoms. However, it is one of the most overlooked and misunderstood areas of exceptionality. This 6-hour course examines ADHD from neurological, emotional, academic, and social angles. Using cutting-edge research Lori formulates practical, immediately usable intervention strategies. Participants gain a more comprehensive understanding about WHY children with ADHD respond in the ways they do. With this information, a team of therapists, parents, and teachers can develop a toolbox that includes mindfulness, executive functioning, academic and social-emotional supports for this population.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify unique neurological implications of ADHD.
2. State ADHD’s impact on sensory systems, motor skills, social skills, communication, and academics.
3. Define ADHD behaviors as primarily a deficit of executive functions.
4. List one, current research article that describes the implications of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and medication.
5. Identify the effectiveness of school-based interventions at various ages and stages of development.
6. List at least three evidence-based intervention strategies for each age and stage for children and teens with ADHD.
