Self-Injurious Behaviors: What Causes SIBs and How Can We Address Them From a Sensory Perspective?

This 90-minute prerecorded webinar provides an overview of what is known about self-injurious behaviors as they relate to people with developmental disabilities. We review SIB research, present a method of analyzing the behaviors, and share strategies for reducing the frequency and intensity of SIBs. Participants can download and print the course manual as well as other helpful forms.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify three potential causes of self-injurious behaviors.
  2. Differentiate the proactive vs. reactive role of sensory strategies in addressing SIBs.
  3. Select up to three cognitive strategies that may be useful in addressing SIBs.
  4. Identify the factors included in the ABC method of behavior analysis.
  5. Recognize the role of rewards and consequences in addressing SIBs.
