Taming Tantrums and Ending Explosions: Strategies to Help Parent, Teach, and Treat Children with Behavioral Disorders

No kid wants to be “the bad kid.” While most children occasionally have temper tantrums or emotional outbursts, some children have significantly more difficulty with defiance, aggression, disruptive, impulsive, and explosive behavior. These behavioral issues have a profound effect on family and peer relationships as well as classroom and academic functioning. Before parents, teachers, and therapists can help children learn how to manage their emotions and behavior, they must first understand why the behavior is occurring. This 2-hour webinar reviews diagnoses and factors that often lead to behavioral issues and provides numerous evidence-based strategies to help children build skills needed to manage emotions, behaviors, and increase self-esteem.

Learning Outcomes

  1. List the five diagnoses in the Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct category of the DSM-5 and their key symptoms.
  2. Identify the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns in typically developing children and adolescents.
  3. Summarize the four primary functions of behavior.
  4. Distinguish the difference between a lagging skill and an unsolved problem in the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP) behavioral analysis tool.
  5. List strategies that can foster the development of lagging skills and decrease behavioral issues.
