Ready, Set, Go: Telehealth in Early Intervention Services (IDEA Part C)

This 2-hour webinar describes the use of telehealth in early intervention services (IDEA Part C). Practical tips, strategies, and resources for planning, preparing, and implementing telehealth are discussed. Norm-referenced and criterion-referenced assessments and interventions amendable to telehealth targeting adaptive skills, gross and fine motor skills, cognition, sensory processing, social-emotional skills, and communication skills are identified. Throughout the webinar, participants are encouraged to reflect on the information shared and consider potential application within their local early intervention system. Opportunities to advocate for families and support best practices in the use of telehealth in early intervention is discussed. This course is also included with the Teletherapy Webinar Package.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Select the reason telehealth aligns well with early intervention services (IDEA Part C).
  2. Identify key resources to support best practices when using telehealth to deliver early intervention services.
  3. Delineate the process for planning, preparing, and implementing telehealth in early intervention services.
  4. Recognize at least three assessments and three interventions that can be used with a telehealth service delivery model.
  5. Identify benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of telehealth in early intervention programs.

Jana Cason, DHSc, OTR/L, FAOTA, is a professor in the Auerbach School of Occupational Therapy at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, and a pediatric occupational therapist. Dr. Cason was an early pioneer engaging in telehealth-related research in early intervention beginning in 2008. She is a past chair of the American Telemedicine Association’s Telerehabilitation Special Interest Group and past chair of the American Occupational Therapy Associations Technology Special Interest Group. Dr. Cason is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association and a telehealth expert with 16 years of practice experience in early intervention. She co-authored the Early Intervention chapter in the textbook Case Smith’s Occupational Therapy for Children and Adolescents. Dr. Cason also co-authored the World Federation of Occupational Therapists’ Position Statement on Telehealth, the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Position Paper on Telehealth, and the American Telemedicine Association’s Blueprint for Telerehabilitation Guidelines and Principles for Delivering Telerehabilitation Services. Dr. Cason has published numerous book chapters, monographs, and articles and is widely cited by authors across disciplines. She also serves as Senior Associate Editor of the International Journal of Telerehabilitation, a peer-reviewed, PubMed indexed journal.
