Delivery to Discharge: The Role of OT in the NICU

Occupational therapists are uniquely qualified to work with children in the NICU given their strong educational foundation in mental health and specialized knowledge in neonatal care. This 2-hour course explores the role of the OT’s multifaceted and holistic approach in this high-risk setting not only to address medical factors and neurodevelopment, but also to understand the interplay between nurture, nature, and the premature sensory system. It is specifically designed for practitioners interested in enhancing their knowledge base in these areas: neonatal neurodevelopment, neuroprotective developmental care interventions, sensory differences, infant and parent mental health, assessments, common pathologies, appropriate feeding, positioning, and pain management practices based on evidence-based research.

Learning Outcomes

    1. Describe the sensory differences in preterm infants.
    2. Identify seven developmental care areas in the NICU.
    3. Describe three common positioning strategies.
    4. Identify five common intervention strategies/considerations in the NICU.
    5. List at least two manage pain strategies in the NICU.
    6. Identify three differences between intra- and extrauterine conditions.
    7. Label three common pathologies observed in the medically complex NICU patient.
