Facilitating Independence and Adaptive Behavior Through Self-Management Systems

Self-management strategies have been utilized as evidence-based practices for learners with a range of academic and behavioral challenges including autism spectrum disorder. Teaching self-management to students empowers them to regulate their behavior across many situations independently. Designed for occupational therapists and other pediatric professionals, this 2-hour webinar provides the steps needed to develop an individualized self-management system. This includes selecting and tracking target behaviors and skills, discriminating between expected and unexpected behaviors, learn self-monitoring and recording strategies, and self-reward for meeting specified goals.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Differentiate functional skills or strategies that can be incorporated into an individualized self-management system.
  2. Apply common OT strategies to an individualized self-management system to generalize the use of these strategies.
  3. Compare self-management systems for data-driven decisions to support the intervention.
