Neurodivergent Affirming Language and Practices in Autism

With an estimated 1 in 44 children being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and approximately 2.2% of the adult population falling into this category, autism activists are becoming increasingly vocal about the need for changes in language, practices, and social supports. Neurodivergent-affirming language and practices differ greatly from the traditional medical model training many educators and therapists. This 90-minute, eye-opening, sometimes uncomfortably challenging webinar discusses current voices in autism advocacy, how we can increase our awareness of promoting self-advocacy and positive neurodivergent paradigms within our communities, and suggests specific ideas for increased diversity within our practices and interventions. Pediatric professionals across various treatment environments can benefit from the material in this webinar. Parents and caregivers may benefit as well.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Compare key components of medical vs. neurodivergent-affirming paradigms.
  2. Identify specific examples of neurodivergent-affirming language.
  3. Recognize neurodivergent-affirming practices for sensory, social, and executive functioning needs.
