Using Occupation and Meaning to Transition At-Risk Youth to Full-of-Promise Youth: A Psychosocial Approach to Evaluation and Intervention

This 2-hour course provides training in the use of accepted occupational therapy evaluations and treatment models to facilitate improved outcomes for youth and adolescents labeled “at-risk” as well as methods to integrate family-centered healing. Applying principles of motivational interviewing to the AOTA Occupational Profile, child, parental, and familial occupations, as well as occupational facilitators and barriers, can be identified. This information can assist with an assessment of an individual’s readiness for change state and brief intervention selection. The efficacy of brief interventions increases when implemented over the course of several sessions and when appropriately matched to an individual’s readiness for change. This structure provides the framework for determining both the individual client treatment, as well as family-centered care. Interventions are considered to engage this population using an occupation-based approach to positive psychology, mindfulness, CO-OP, and executive functioning. As many clients struggle to follow through on these practices, we examine habit and routine change through the lens of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply concepts related to the at-risk behaviors in youth and adolescents to determine appropriate evaluations and assessments.
2. Create individualized plans of care with evidence-based interventions to address the needs of this population and their caregiver(s).
3. Apply assessment and intervention strategies to increase individualization for school transition planning and IEP goal creation.
4. Strategize population program development for the delivery of services to support this population.
5. Articulate the value of learned interventions for this population to a broader audience (i.e., juvenile court systems, child and youth services, foster agencies, legislators).

Alyson Stover, MOT, JD, OTR/L, BCP, is an assistant professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh. She obtained her Juris Doctorate in Law with a post-graduate certificate in Health Law from the University of Pittsburgh. She has practiced primarily in pediatrics and currently owns a private outpatient pediatric practice north of Pittsburgh, where she continues to serve her clients through a clinical role and manage therapy staff. Her practice includes traditional outpatient services, pediatric mental health interventions, community-based interventions, and school-based contracts.  She is AOTA Board Certified in Pediatrics. Alyson’s interests include using occupational therapy as a powerful driving force for larger health care change, advancing occupational therapy’s national relevance and participation in policy change.
