The Interoceptive Sensory System

Interoception has only recently been added as the eighth sensory system and yet a thorough understanding of this hidden sense is vital to therapists working with children with sensory modulation disorders. Information from the interoceptive system lets us know when we need to eat, drink, go to the bathroom, seek help for an illness, or take a breather to slow down our cardiovascular system. Dysfunction in this critical sensory system can lead to issues with toilet training, feeding, emotional regulation, diagnosing of illnesses, and so much more. In this 1.5-hour course, Gwen covers the basics of the interoceptive system and then provides a wealth of resources and strategies so you can help children right away.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the symptoms of over- and under-responsiveness to interoceptive input.
  2. Describe the location of interoceptive receptors and their triggers.
  3. Propose appropriate activity modifications and adaptations based on interoceptive deficits.
  4. Plan sensory-based intervention strategies based on identified issues with the interoceptive system.
