Creating Time Awareness and Time Usage Skills in Children with Poor Executive Functioning

Executive functions (EFs) skills allow us to plan, prioritize, organize, and carry out actions and allow us to think into the future. Children with poor EF skills often live in the here and now, and have limited ability to think, predict, or plan. Many of our self-regulation supports and strategies are dependent on first helping the child to master the time concepts. This 2-hour course provides a new look at how to systematically teach and support children while they develop a sense of time.

Learning Outcomes

1. Define EF and list the skills associated with the definition.
2. Examine EF weaknesses as an inability to think into the future.
3. Distinguish between the different stages of time management abilities/needs.
4. Describe strategies for externalizing time such as visual schedules, apps, and visual timers.
5. Identify strategies and resources to assist children in developing time sense.
